Little Shu Box
The goal of Little Shu Box is to increase awareness of East Asian and Asian American culture and experience through children’s literature and craft activities. It is designed for both families of East Asian heritage and families looking to expose their children to diversity through Asian literature. The story behind Little Shu Box from Michelle Lin, founder: When I took a close look at our children’s bookshelves recently, I noticed that while there were many black, brown, and Indigenous voices represented in their books, there was an alarming lack of East Asian and Asian American representation among the books that I had selected for them. I had been so focused on exposing my children to other cultures that I had neglected to educate them about their own culture. And it wasn’t for lack of material: Asian voices do exist in children’s literature, and much more than they did when I was a child in the 1980’s. Thus, the idea for Little Shu Box was born, with the aim of introducing kids to East Asian and Asian American voices in children’s books.
